International Women's Day

“Inspiring Futures”

 Thursday 8th March 2012

10am to 4pm @ The Sustainability Hub, Keele University

FREE EVENT FOR STAFF AND STUDENTS

A celebration of International Women’s Day took place at Keele University on Thursday 8th March, as part of the Keele Unity series.

The global celebration of International Women’s Day marks the economic, political and social achievements of women around the world. The day was commemorated for the first time on 19 March 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. More than one million women and men attended rallies on that first commemoration. In 1975, during International Women's Year, the United Nations began celebrating 8 March as International Women's Day.

The chosen theme for 2012 is “Inspiring Futures” and focuses on recognising and celebrating the potential of our staff and students in realising their personal and professional goals, without the hindrances of gender bias and discrimination.

The day was packed with programme of inspirational speakers and workshops focusing on entrepreneurship, empowerment and employability. It also covered the theme of women in the sciences, in support of the University’s commitments and recognition of the Athena Swan Charter.

Sara Parkin (OBE) Founder Director of Forum for the Future delivered a key note  on the day. After starting her working life as a nurse, in various roles she has campaigned for the environment and sustainable development for over 40 years. In 2001 she was awarded an OBE for services to education and sustainability.
