Keele Mentors

Our mentors work on a voluntary basis, providing additional support for students new to Keele University. All mentors undertake specific training and are carefully matched with a small group of mentees, usually according to the subjects they are studying.

A Keele Mentor is

  • Welcoming and reassuring
  • A friendly point of contact during the ‘settling in’ stages
  • Able to signpost and answer questions about life at Keele

A Keele Mentor will

  • Make contact with their mentee prior to them starting at Keele
  • Meet with their mentee at the Mentor Match up Event
  • Keep in contact and meet up with their mentees during the first few weeks of settling in
  • Provide individually tailored support to these new students

Keele mentors represent Keele and follow a code of conduct to ensure a quality provision for new students. As part of this, they are also made aware of what they can’t and shouldn’t do as peer mentors, and also, what we wouldn’t expect them to do!

Mentor Training

All Keele Mentors will attend training sessions which will provide them with the information and skills they need for this role. We will begin recruiting and training for new mentors again in 2013/14 academic year.

There will also be Refresher Training sessions for current Keele Mentors in December 2013. Please email mentors@keele.ac.uk to sign up for one of these sessions.

We do not expect Keele Mentors to

  • Do and know everything. But they should be able to refer on to the right place!
  • Counsel or advise their mentees. Instead, Keele Mentors should be aware of our support services and be able to direct their mentees to them as necessary

We do expect Keele Mentors to

  • Understand the limits of confidentiality
  • Use their School or the Keele Mentors scheme coordinator for advice and guidance
  • Aim to be punctual for appointments with their mentees
  • Provide accurate and timely information and advice
