IT Services

Finance & IT provide the following print-related services:

  • Networked printers for general use from PCs on campus
  • Setting up of networked printers in faculties and departments
  • Administration of charging for use of printers provided for student use in faculties

Networked printers for general use are located in the Library, some faculties have printers available to their students. Anyone with a networked pc can submit jobs to them, but you have to go to the Library to collect the printout. Each printer has a release station - you can either place your student/staff card into the reader or log on using your user name and password on the touch screen and see a list of jobs you have submitted for the printer and then release the ones you want to the print. You can delete jobs you don't want, or leave jobs to be printed later - though jobs are removed if not printed within 36 hours.

Printing services include:

  A4 monochrome, 80gsm paper, 3p
  A4 full colour, 100gsm smooth paper, 14p
  A3 full colour, 100gsm smooth paper, 24p
A4 monochrome on the colour printer (same paper, text quality matches that on colour pages), 4p
A3 monochrome on the colour printer (same paper, text quality matches that on colour pages), 7p

The A4 monochrome service runs on four printers on the first floor in the IT Area and one on the ground floor in LABs 5,6,7.

The colour service runs on two printers on the first floor  in the IT area.

The special monochrome service (A4 and A3) runs on the colour printers.

When a printer runs more than one service – A3/A4, colour/monochrome on colour – and your document includes mixed pages (some colour some monochrome) the release station will work out the total cost for the job, including the appropriate cost for each page.

All these printers print on both sides of the paper. The prices given are per side. The default setting in the print drivers on open access and lab PCs is double-sided prints; if you want single-sided you must select this feature in the Print dialogue in your PC application.

Our charging system

All self-service and general-use printers provided by IT Services have a per-page charge, as detailed above. Students are given initail free credit of £2. This is debited every time you print on one of our printers.

Once you have used up your £2 you will need to ensure you have credit on your student card.

If you have any problems with the printing or charging system, please report them to the IT Service Desk. We are happy to refund to your account any charges for prints spoiled by the system – but not when you have made the mistake.

Setting up of networked printers is a job we do for you, unless you have your own departmental network. To be networked, the printer should have a network interface, a network socket close by, and of course a connecting cable. It also needs a name known to the network software, which we set up for you, and there is no charge unless wiring installation is involved. If you have not already sought our advice on printer selection please contact Purchasing.Back to top

Administration of print charging for departments is an extension of the charging system we run on our own printers (see below). Departments who wish to provide a networked printer for student use and levy a per-page charge should contact the IT Service Desk for further details. You may set the charge at whatever level you wish. Please note that there are considerable set-up costs associated with printers in the charging system, and a recurrent licensing fee. IT Services will need to recoup these costs from the funds that accrue from the printer's use before passing any remaining funds to the owning department, so this system is suitable only for devices that are sufficiently well used to cover these costs as well as the normal costs of consumables, maintenance and depreciation – unless you are willing to subsidise them. Back to top
