Prof Warren Lenney

Professor Lenney took up his current post of Consultant Respiratory Paediatrician at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire in 1996. For several years he was Associate Medical Director for Research and Development for North Staffordshire and is Chair of the British Paediatric Respiratory Society’s Research Committee.

Prof Lenney lectures widely on paediatric respiratory issues and was awarded a personal Chair at Keele University in 2005.

In 2006 Prof Lenney was appointed Director of the West Midlands Local Research Network for Medicines for Children (MfC).

Current research interests involve the genetics of asthma, surrogate markers of inflammation in children and studies involving the actions and benefits of combination therapy.

1999: £50,000 Further grant from Zeneca Pharmaceuticals to study genetics in pre-school children with asthma. Development of cold air challenge system, body plethysmography and the interrupter technique.
2000: £13,000 Clinical studies; follow-up of preterm babies with chronic lung disease. Four clinical centres in the UK.
2000-2001: £13,000 Multinational study assessing the efficacy of combination therapy in childhood asthma. Lead Investigator.
2001: £58,000 Health Action Zone grant (in association with Dr Charles Pantin) to develop asthma care pathways and audit the results.
2001: £21,000 Stoke Housing Authority project to assess the association of asthma and poor housing conditions.
2003: £50,000 Educational grant to develop studies in childhood asthma and to continue the previous genetic asthma work.
2003: £5,000 North Staffordshire Medical Institute grant to develop SIFT-MS study of pseudomonas infections in cystic fibrosis.
2003: £2,000 Peel Medical Trust Grant to study pseudomonas genotype in cystic fibrosis.
