- John Slavin
Following surgical training, from October 1991 Dr John Slavin spent a year working as a Smith & Nephew Research Fellow with Professor Hunt, Professor of Surgery, at the University of California, San Francisco, and a major figure in the field of wound healing. His work from that period principally examined the role of TGF-b in tissue repair, and formed the basis for publications and a Mastership in Surgery from London University It led to an interest in the role that the inflammatory response plays in surgical disease.
Whilst at Liverpool as a Clinical Senior Lecturer in the Department of Surgery, most of Dr Slavin’s research activity was in the area of acute pancreatitis. Laboratory studies investigated the role that inflammatory mediators play in the pathogenesis of this condition and the possible use of antagonists to ameliorate distant organ injury. Clinical studies examined the use plasma levels of inflammatory mediators as an aid to early severity prediction. The Royal Liverpool University Hospital is a tertiary referral centre for patients with pancreatic necrosis. A technique of minimally invasive pancreatic necrosectomy; originally pioneered in Glasgow was introduced in Liverpool. Dr Slavin described the initial results with this technique at national meetings and has been involved in seven external research project grants at Liverpool.
In March 2002 he moved to Leighton Hospital (Mid Cheshire NHS Hospitals Foundation Trust), but has continued with a clinical research interest, and has become interested in the use of administrative health service databases as a means of analysing surgical outcome.
