- Fran Gilchrist
Dr Fran Gilchrist was appointed as a Lecturer at Keele in September 2012 and is a Consultant in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire (UHNS).
Before coming to Keele he spent two years as Cystic Fibrosis Clinical Fellow at the Manchester Adult Cystic Fibrosis Centre, and he completed most of his medical training in the Manchester area and at Manchester University, but including a post in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine in the West Midlands Deanery based at UHNS and the Birmingham Children’s Hospital.
For his PhD project Fran is using Selected Ion Flow Tube Mass Spectrometry (SIFT-MS) to investigate the role of hydrogen cyanide as an in-vitro and in-vivo marker of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) infection.

His other reserch interests include:
- other breath markers for common respiratory organisms,
- the paediatric risk factors for COPD and the role of computer programmes,
- telehealth and smartphone applications in improving knowledge and adherence with treatment for children with respiratory illnesses.
