Dr Deakin's research has focussed on creating links between Keele and the patient population in North Staffordshire.  He has worked to create opportunities for the introduction of medical personel into clinical and laboratory research within Keele, largely through associations with the Nuffield Hospital and MD programme.

His research interests include:

  • Molecular epidemiology
  • Molecular Carcinogenesis
  • Metastasis
  • Apoptosis
  • Clinical Oncology
  • Clinical Management of GI Cancer
  • Medical education

ISTM Research theme: 1. Clinical & Diagnostic Science

Research interests:

• Molecular Epidemiology of gastro-intestinal cancers involving GST polymorphisms and VitD receptor polymorphisms (collaboration with Prof RC Strange and Dr AA Fryer)
• Molecular Carcinogenesis relating to gastro-intestinal and pancreatic tumours (collaborations with Prof RC Strange, Dr AA Fryer, Prof WE Farrell, Dr P Hoban and Prof G Williams).
• Metastasis - specifically mechanisms of metastasis (collaboration with Dr P Hoban on E cadherin, polymorphisms, methylation and gastro-intestinal tumours).
• Apoptosis and its association with the reponse to chemoradiotherapy in colorectal cancer (collaboration with Prof G Williams)
• Clinical Oncology Research - specifically clinical management of gastro-intestinal cancer

Clinical Trials:

REFLUX trial (lead clinician for UHNS, co-ordinated by University of Aberdeen)
