Having completed a BSc (Hons) in Biochemistry at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth Alison began her research career working at The North East Wales Institute on Deeside working in a group producing monoclonal antibodies for use in Muscular Dystrophy research. She then moved to work in the Quality Control Department of Evans Medical Ltd, Liverpool and then Porton Speywood Ltd, Wrexham.

In 2002 she moved into rheumatology research with Keele University at the RJAH Orthopaedic Hospital in Oswestry. In 2006 she began a part-time PhD in Biomedical Engineering with Keele University. She investigated the role of chemokine receptors on leukocytes in rheumatoid arthritis, completing this in 2011. In 2012 Alison began working as a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Institute for Science & Technology in Medicine, Keele University based at the RJAH Hospital, continuing her PhD work looking at chemokine receptors in inflammation in inflammatory arthritis.
