Health Service Research Unit
The HEALTH SERVICE RESEARCH UNIT (HSRU) is a joint initiative between Keele's Research Institutes for Science & Technology in Medicine, Primary Care Sciences and a range of NHS partners in North Staffordshire.
The HSRU opened in September 2010 to identify and promote beacon pathways of care as exemplars for integrating programmes of education, training, evaluation and applied health research with service development and high quality care.
The HSRU will develop, sustain and expand the agenda set by the HEALTH INNOVATION AND EDUCATION CLUSTER (HIEC) IN WEST MIDLANDS NORTH (WMN) for service development and evaluation.

Mission
HSRU Mission
To develop a high quality programme of applied health research, training, and evaluation, in partnership with NHS and other local service providers, designed to be of direct benefit to patients and to inform health care policy and practice locally, nationally and internationally.
Initial Focus
HSRU Initial Focus
To support research, training and evaluation linked to service development at the interface between primary and secondary care, and across the multiple clinical disciplines and interdisciplinary teams involved in the delivery of that care, and to support:
- the North Staffordshire health economy’s Fit for the Future programme of providing innovative specialist care closer to the community and to home and
- the development of the West Midlands (North) Health Innovation and Education Cluster (HIEC).
To promote health services research training and capacity development and to support awareness and expertise in evaluation methods embedded in service
Management
HSRU Management
The Health Services Research Unit Board represents the two Research Institute partners, the West Midlands (North) Research Design Service (RDS), Staffordshire University, and NHS partners, including UHNS, Stoke PCT, North Staffordshire PCT, the Fit for the Future programme, commissioning, provider and patient organisations.
The purpose of the Board is to shape and set the overall strategy and programme of the HSRU, and review its budget and performance. The HSRU Board will also act as the group responsible for overseeing the operational delivery of the HIEC programme, through regular meetings of a Management & Budget Group.
Two groups, aScientific Group and a HIEC Development Group, accountable to the Board, will develop programmes and projects, and organise calls for proposals. The Scientific Group will also scrutinise, peer review and approve project, fellowship and PhD proposals. The two groups will each be represented on the Board.
