My Academic Induction

On the following tabs you will find information about what you can expect from your Academic Induction, whether you are an undergraduate, postgraduate taught or research student.

Programmes, Schools, Faculties and Research Institutes

Keele has 14 Academic Schools within three Faculties.  There are also five Research Institutes.  Each of these are responsible for teaching and research within defined subject areas.  They are all committed to ensuring that every new student is successfully inducted to Keele, has the opportunity to meet staff and fellow students, understands the values of Keele and is well prepared for the demands of study within Higher Education.

Meetings, Activities and Events

Most programmes and/or Schools will host events where you can meet academic staff as well as other students in an informal setting.  Talks from staff will provide information about the content of your programme, as well as give information about modules which you have enrolled on and options for subsequent years of study, if appropriate.

There may also be social activities and events for new students; it is really important to attend these as they are a great opportunity to get to know people and make friends with whom you will be studying during the year or semester ahead.

There are several compulsory events and meetings that you must attend during Welcome Week.  They are designed to assist you in settling into your studies, for you to meet teaching and support staff and to meet other new students who you will work with throughout the duration of your course.

In addition to providing invaluable information, all of these scheduled events and activities provide a great opportunity for you to meet key staff from within your School/s as well as your fellow students.

Alongside these webpages and the International Guide, you may also be sent information about induction events being run by your programme, School or Institute.  This will include details of times and locations of specific talks, meetings and activities.

Students undertaking Dual Honours programmes are expected to attend induction activities hosted by both of their Schools where possible.

You will also receive information about your programme(s) and be introduced to the first year of your programme(s) of study.  Another important event in the early days at Keele is the meeting you will have with your Personal Tutor/Advisor, who is there to support your academic, personal and career development throughout your time at Keele.

Your School(s) will send information about their welcome events before the start of your studies.  This will include a Welcome Week timetable detailing times and locations of specific talks, meetings and activities.

Welcome Week arrangements for students studying the following programmes - Medicine, Nursing, Midwifery, Pharmacy, Social Work and Physiotherapy

Faculty of Health

Medicine, Nursing, Midwifery, Pharmacy, Social Work and Physiotherapy students will have separate induction arrangements but should also attend one of the UniSmart events if possible.

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is a challenging and yet rewarding career and studying physiotherapy here at Keele mirrors this.  The physiotherapy course is packed full of information, some of which builds on what you may already know plus much more that will be new learning.

We want you to be totally comfortable while studying here and consequently your first week with us is Physiotherapy Induction Week.  Induction Week is designed to answer all of those questions that first year physiotherapy students have.  You will be introduced to members of staff, your own personal tutor as well as the fundamentals of studying physiotherapy at Keele.  Full details of the induction programme will appear online via the Keele Learning Environment (KLE) from August onwards plus we'll put information on there to smooth your entry on to the course.  Don't worry; we'll let you know how to access the KLE and send information relevant to you in good time before the course officially starts.  Paul Firth will be your Year 1 Head and he will be co-ordinating all of your first year activities before you arrive and while you are actually here.  As well as being accessible via email, he will be talking to you virtually through webinars and on Facebook.  So watch out for emails letting you know when new information is being released.  In the meantime you are welcome to email Paul with those pressing questions that just cannot wait.

Induction

All new home and international research students are required to attend a University Research Student induction programme which will take place on Tuesday 1st October from 1.30pm to 3.15pm in the Alan Gemmell Lecture Theatre (0.15) Huxley Building.  This is an excellent opportunity to hear from key members of University staff, learn about the services and resources available to you and also meet both new and current research students.

An up-to-date programme of events for the day will be sent to your Keele email.

Research Institute Attendance

The Research Institutes will be holding their own welcome induction programmes on Tuesday 1st October from 3.15pm and 5.30pm.  You will receive additional information from your Research Institute (RI) which will tell you where you are expected to go.  Please make sure that you note the time and venue.  Following this induction, all students are invited to evening events organised by the Keele Postgraduate Association (KPA).
