- Academic and English Language Requirements
All courses have specific entry requirements which are given in the descriptions on this website.
As a guide, we normally require a first or second class honours degree or overseas equivalent for entry. In addition, some courses will require significant relevant professional experience (usually at least two years) and current professional employment. If you have a diploma or equivalent and relevant work experience we may be able to consider you for entry or recommend that you take one of our Pre-Master's programmes.
The International Admissions Office will be happy to advise you on the acceptability of your qualifications before you apply.
English LanguageAll international students whose first language is not English must provide evidence of a qualification in English Language.
Students must take one of the internationally recognised examinations such as IELTS, TOEFL iB or Pearson Test.
For specific English Language requirements please see below.
Postgraduate English Language Requirements
The minimum score for entry to most courses is academic IELTS 6.5 (with at least 5.5 in each sub-test).
If a higher score is required this will be listed under the entry for the relavant course.
For a comparison of English language qualifications meeting Keele's entry requirements please consult the English Language Table
Please note that IELTS/TOEFL tests must be no more than 2 years old at the start of the course for which you have applied.
Pre-Sessional English Language Programmes for Entry to Keele University
If you have taken one of the English language qualifications but did not achieve the grade you needed, you can study on a pre-sessional English Language course before you start your degree studies. Keele has links with two language colleges: English in Chester and Walsall College.
If you need a Visa to study at keele this will be issued by UKBA on the basis of you achieving the required language competencies by the end of the pre-sessional course, but could be withdrawn if you fail to make satisfactory progress.
Keele International will help you apply for a pre-sessional course if you need this.
English Language Classes
Keele's provides additional English language support for postgraduate students throughout the academic year. Students may sign up for Writing Drop-in sessions or can use the Self-Access facilities within the English Language Unit. Some Schools arrange for the English Language Unit to provide specialised classes for groups of postgraduate students. It is advisable to check with your School to see if these are planned.
Postgraduate Induction Week for International Students
All international students will be invited to attend an induction week in September, before the start of their course. For many courses this is compulsory. As well as helping with familiarisation and the practical aspects of settling in at keele, it will provide guidance on academic skills, essay writing, research and use of sources, examination and revision skills, using time effectively, and how to avoid common problems like plagiarism.
