Professor Patricia Black

"From Pupil to Professor - Reflections on a Journey in Pharmacy Education and Professional Development"

Tuesday, 14th May 2013 6pm Westminster Theatre, Chancellor's Building

"My talk will be contextualised within ‘Pat’s story’ and the influences and personal experiences that have shaped
my approach
to the design of postgraduate education to meet the continuing professional development needs of
pharmacists and other
healthcare professionals. Part of this story is my research into the use of structured
learning portfolios and the conceptual
model of reflective learning for professional practice development that
emerged from it. I will also share an overview of some of
the collaborative research projects that are
representative of my work as an academic whose journey to a professorial Chair
 has followed the ‘road less
travelled’ of teaching and academic leadership."

Patricia Black is Professor of Pharmacy Professional Development and
Education and the strategic lead for postgraduate taught courses in the
School of Pharmacy. She started her career at Keele in 1994 when she
joined the multidisciplinary group of academics, practitioners and
researchers that formed the Department of Medicines Management.
Pat has a record of leadership and innovation for her work that has been
acknowledged beyond Keele, and she was a recipient of one of the prestigious
National Teaching Fellowship awards in 2011.
She demonstrates vision and leading- edge thinking in her practice, particularly
in relation to open, distance and flexible learning that provides pharmacists
and other health professionals with a multitude of options and flexible pathways to meet their personal learning and professional development goals. Her research into the use of structured reflective learning portfolios for advanced practice roles has received national and international recognition.
