StudyWrite: An Interactive Resource for Improving Academic Scholarship

StudyWrite is a pilot project working towards developing a series of six online interactive modules with the aim of improving students understanding of academic scholarship.

Freely available to all Keele University staff, these resources have been produced ready to include in any KLE module with the ability to track participation via Blackboard's inbuilt Statistics Tracking function.

Project Aims

Project Aims

Initially funded by Keele University's Teaching Innovation Scheme, StudyWrite is a pilot project that has now produced its first two deliverable 'modules'. As a result, it is being made available to staff ahead of the 2013/14 academic year with the intention of gathering as much feedback as possible to inform the development of further resources and to refine the existing modules. Underpinning StudyWrite, the project aims to enable students:

  • to know the territory of academic scholarship,
  • identify different types of information sources,
  • read the “map” to find the best route from “reading and assessing” sources to “writing and referencing” (from Study to Write),
  • equip themselves with the tools to enable them to plan and complete their journey (e.g. searching, reading, note taking, assessing and referencing skills), and, avoid some of the hazards and pitfalls along the way.

Adding a StudyWrite Module to a KLE Course

Adding a StudyWrite Module to a KLE Course

Adding a StudyWriite module to a KLE course may sound daunting, however, it is as simple as including a weblink to a module you are teaching. This step-by-step guide will demonstrate the process of adding a weblink and enabling the Statistics Tracking function to see which students have accessed this resource.

  1. Using the links at the bottom of this page, first download the module you would like to import, making sure to save it somewhere memorable (e.g. on the computer's Desktop).
  2. Login to the KLE, navigating to the module you wish to include the StudyWrite resources.
  3. Ensuring that Edit Mode is switched to 'On', hover over the Build Content tab and select Content Package (SCORM)
  4. Select the Browse My Computer button and find the .zip file that you downloaded earlier.
  5. Click Submit and wait until the next screen appears. This may take up to a minute.
  6. Add a description if you wish and copy the settings as pictured below.

Feedback

Feedback

As StudyWrite is currently in its pilot phase, we are keen to gather as much feedback as possible to help develop existing and future resources. To do this, a Google Form has been embedded into the modules for students to complete anonymously. If using the resources as a tutor, please encourage students to complete the feedback form.

Also, we would like to hear from academic colleagues who have utilised StudyWrite. Please email any of the project team (details on the next tab) with your experience of using these materials and how they may be developed. All feedback is gratefully received.

Known Issues

  • For student's viewing the content on an Apple iPad, there is a freely available app to ensure that the content appears correctly. This is a consequence of Apple devices not supporting Flash objects within the Safari browser. Anybody opening StudyWrite on an iPad will be prompted to download the app before accessing the materials.
  • As most browsers have an inbuilt pop-up blocker, there may be a need to authorise the content before it will open. Most browsers will provide a prompt for you to do this or display a symbol within the address bar. This is not a fault of StudyWrite as opening within the existing browser window would not allow the user to return to the KLE course they were previously viewing.
