Keele Unity
The directorate has supported a series of equality and diversity events which were kick-started in February 2012 with the celebration of LGBT History Month. This was followed by International Women’s Day on 8th March where the HR team organised a bake sale and raised £120 for women’s charity EMBRACE and Breast Cancer Care.
The directorate has further supported National Care Leavers week in partnership with Staffordshire University, to highlight the challenges faced by care leavers wishing to enter Higher Education and the additional support which is available to them, Dignity and Wellbeing Week, and National Day of Disabled People which was co-ordinated by Disability and Dyslexia support. All events have had a focus on raising awareness of equality issues, involving the Keele community, and providing a platform for capturing the views of staff, students and the wider community to shape equality activity. Watch out for Keele Unity 2013.
January saw he introduction of a new team to support students in Halls of Residence – Residence Support was created to offer opportunity for ALL students to engage as Residence Support Assistants to provide support to students and develop the sense of community within our Halls.
A record number of more than 230 nominations were received for the Keele Excellence Awards in Learning and Teaching in February 2012. The Award scheme recognises teachers that have inspired students and colleagues either individually or as a team and in July 2012 five staff received awards at the graduation ceremonies.
Between February and May, LPDC led a participative review of our staff development offer with professional services staff. Supported by the Association of University Administrators, the project identified ten areas of development need. Some of these were delivered during the summer and others continue to be part of our core work 2012/13.
March was first time that Keele contributed to National Student Money Week and following a winter of works, the refurbishment work at the Covert was finished which includes a new training/ meeting room.
Taking International Students further…..The Encounter Programme offers International Students the opportunity to engage in fun events and trips. The headline event was a trip to Edinburgh in March. This was a very successful trip resulting in good reviews from the students and will now be repeated bi-annually, alternating with Paris.
