Health Policy @ Keele

Health Policy has developed its academic strengths within the context of Keele’s philosophy of interdisciplinary working.
We teach about, and study, the four NHSs and health systems of the UK, especially England, Wales and Scotland. Our curriculum also focuses upon Europe and the USA when comparing health systems. Currently, attempts at system reform in the USA are being studied, as are atypical but innovative management reforms in certain parts of the US system.

The faculty are all specialists in their areas, and work in a flexible and cooperative manner. We have a strong track record in global advisory work eg. for World Health Organization and UK DFID. HP&PP programmes (link) are outlined in the link.

Our key areas of current specialism are:

  • Health policy and politics
  • Health systems and reforms in the United Kingdom
  • Health reform internationally
  • Organisational and management studies
  • Leadership  (link here to CML)
  • Partnerships and collaboration
  • Community health.

The evaluation of the MBA (Health Executive) programme and of our Clinical Management short courses are consistently high. The consistent recruitment to courses, often on personal recommendation from other students, and success in research applications at national and international levels, also speak of our standing.

We believe that evaluation and feedback are essential to any organisation’s effective functioning, including its own. It should be judged by others, not by itself. The two formal assessments of British Universities are the Quality Assurance Agency assessment of teaching, and the Research Assessment Exercise. The most recent RAE reported in 2008/9 that we were part of a submission which significantly increased the resources awarded to Keele, through the Research Institute for Public Policy and Management. Our research was rated as of national significance.

HP&PP is the editorial home of the International Journal of Health Planning and Management.
