Rapid Critical Appraisal

This is a 1.25 hour course, aimed at all Health Library users who wish to develop critical appraisal skills. Finding and retrieving evidence from electronic sources is the first step in evidence based practice; the next step is to appraise the evidence.

You will learn to:

  • Understand the principles of critical appraisal and why you should undertake it
  • Appraise published research and judge its reliability
  • Assess the relevance of published research to your own work

Course content

  • What critical appraisal is... and is not
  • Why critical appraisal is necessary
  • Assessing the validity of a study
  • Assessing the results of a study
  • Assessing the relevance of results to your own practice

This course runs in 2 versions:

  • Qualitative Research - where a qualitative paper is analysed
  • Systematic Review or Quantitative Research - systematic review is analysed
