Cochrane Library Introduction

This is a 2 hour course, aimed at all Health Library users who need to search for high quality research-evidence on the effectiveness of healthcare interventions.

You will learn to:

  • Explain the main levels of evidence to be found in the literature
  • Explain why a systematic review is the highest level of evidence
  • Explain the differences between the databases included in the Cochrane Library
  • Conduct searches in the Cochrane Library to retrieve high quality evidence
  • Interpret a systematic review and meta-analysis diagram

Course content

  • Levels of evidence and the need for systematic reviews
  • When to use the Cochrane Library
  • When not to use the Cochrane Library
  • Cochrane Library databases
  • Free text and subject heading (MeSH) searching
  • Browsing by topic
  • Viewing, saving and printing results
  • Displaying the CDSR odds-ratio diagrams and tables
