eJournals for NHS Users
NHS users can access a range of electronic journals online. These are supplied via a number of routes:
- NHS Core Content - purchased nationally
- Regional content - purchased by the Health Library in association with regional NHS organisations
- Local content - purchased by the Health Library
You can view the list of available ejournals via the NHS Evidence Journals page which is accessible via an Athens login.
On-going Journals Problems
Ebsco Databases & Journals (including Cinahl & Medline) (Keele & NHS users)
We are aware that there is a problem accessing Ebsco databases and journals when users have been using both Keele and NHS Athens logins during the same computer session. The system gets confused about which type of user you are and presents an error screen refusing you access. You need to clear the Internet cache for Ebsco by clicking here and click on the option "Remove EbscoHost Authentication Cookie". If this doesn't work, the best we can suggest is to log out, restart your computer then only use one set of resources (Keele or NHS) for the computer session; log out and restart your computer to use the other set of resources. We have reported the problem to Ebsco, however any fix in the foreseeable future seems unlikely.
Royal Society of Medicine eJournals (NHS users)
The ejournal titles that we subscribe to and are published by the Royal Society of Medicine are being moved to the SAGE Journals platform. Unfortunately SAGE are having some problems providing like-for-like access and this is affecting our ability to access these titles. This involves 3 titles: Clinical Risk, Health Services Management Research and the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine. At the moment many of the articles seemed to be freely available and we do have access to some holdings via other collections and in print. We have reported the problems and hope that the publishers can resolve this issue soon.
Tips & Hints using eJournals
- All available NHS eJournals can be viewed via the NHS Evidence Journals page (Athens login required).
- This facility will show you the titles available, the holdings you can access, the location of the title, how to get access and a link to the title page.
- Whilst we endeavour to ensure all journals are accessible via Athens username and password some publishers do not provide this facility:
- Athens username & password - some providers require you to login in individually to their system even though you may have already logged in to Athens. Look for an 'Athens Login' link - this will be different for each provider but it is usually a small blue link near where the provider login link is located. The link you need is not always obvious and you many need to click their log in option to get to the Athens link.
- Journal username & password - additional username / password details may be required. This information is available on the title entry on the MyJournals list.
- Network access via IP address - access to full-text may be restricted to individual networks (the Health Library network and/or the UHNS network).
- Ebsco journals via Ebsco EJS
More help using ebsco journals - Ebsco Databases such as Cinahl and Medline
More help using Ebsco Databases - Elsevier ScienceDirect titles require you to login separately via the Elsevier Athens login page; see the login link at the top-right-hand corner and follow the Athens links. Users using this database for the first time will be prompted to register their Athens username and password.
More help using Elsevier ScienceDirect - Ovid titles include restrictions on the number of concurrent users. You may see a warning and be denied immediate access. Please check back later. If you have finished using a particular Ovid title please logout to release the journal for another user.
More help using Ovid - Wiley Online Library titles may require you to repeat the login process.
More help using Wiley Online Library - Announcements about known issues regarding ejournal access will be made via the Health Library News blog. You can sign-up for email updates.
- Any errors should be reported to the e-resources librarian.
