Student helps GB team stretch for Gold
Sally Montgomery with the Great Britain Sprint Canoeing team in Portugal
"It was a tremendous pleasure working with the team, as they were all so hard-working and committed to their sport. The athletes and staff made me feel extremely welcome and I am very proud to have worked with them. I feel I have learnt some valuable skills from the camp and received some very positive feedback."
In February 2011 a third-year physiotherapy student at Keele University, Sally Montgomery, was invited to attend a training camp with the Great Britain Sprint Canoeing team. The camp was held in Portugal, and consisted of seven days of intense training at one of Europe’s best facilities. Some of the countries’ top sprint athletes were present at the camp, comprising of a total of thirteen from the GB Junior Sprint Team and three athletes from the GB under 23s Canoe Sprint Team, as well as the coaching and support staff.
The Portugal trip is just one of many training camps held prior to the main event season. Not only do these training camps benefit the athletes’ performances in major competitions such as the European and World Championships, they are crucial preparation for future Olympic events.
Whilst in Portugal, Sally had roles in injury management, delivering core stability and stretching classes, benchmarking assessments, soft tissue techniques and first aid, as well as assisting the coaching staff wherever possible. Sally stated that it was extremely important that everyone involved with the camp worked as part of a team, as this ensured smooth running and helped the athletes to gain as much as possible from the seven days. Sally said: "It was a tremendous pleasure working with the team, as they were all so hard-working and committed to their sport. The athletes and staff made me feel extremely welcome and I am very proud to have worked with them. I feel I have learnt some valuable skills from the camp and received some very positive feedback."
