On 26th and 27th March School of Health and Rehabilitation (SHAR) hosted a national course - 'Neuromuscular Disease - Managing Respiratory Complications' - a collaboration between Keele University, our local partner the University Hospital of North Staffordshire (UHNS) and Glasgow Caledonian University.
The course leaders were Caroline Brown, Principle Physiotherapist in Medicine, UHNS, Sharron Blumenthal, Senior Lecturer in Physiotherapy, Glasgow Caledonian University and Helen Humphreys, Lecturer in Physiotherapy at Keele University. The course included both theory and practical sessions on Respiratory Complications of NMD by Dr. N Mustfa of UHNS, Glossopharyngeal Breathing by the internationally renowned physiotherapist Barbara Webber, Breath Stacking by Jane Anderson of Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, Mechanical Insufflation - Ex-Sufflation by Dr Michelle Chatwin, Consultant Physiotherapist at the Clinical and Academic Department of Sleep and Breathing, Royal Brompton Hospital and assisted coughing by Ruth Kent of the Lane Fox Unit, Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust.
The course was attended by 40 physiotherapists and nurses with an interest in NMD working in acute, primary care and hospice settings from as far afield as Northern Ireland, Scotland, Devon and the South East.
