I’m a consultant rheumatologist at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire and completed my medical training in the North West and West Midlands Deaneries, having qualified in Manchester. I completed a MD at Birmingham.
My initial interest in education was in postgraduate education – the higher medical training of rheumatologists, postgraduate education of nurses and allied health professionals in rheumatology, in aspects of core medical training in medicine and in the education of medical teachers. For 5 years I was an Associate Dean (Education) in the West Midlands Deanery.
With the advent of a medical school at Keele, I became involved in undergraduate medical education, initially as a module lead in the Manchester Medical course. I was appointed to my current role in 2007.
My first experience of research was completing a MD, based at Birmingham University, in aspects of T cell immunology.
On moving to Stoke I developed an interest in clinical rheumatology research, specifically in studies on outcomes and interventions in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.
I completed a Masters in Medical Education at Dundee University. My initial interests were particularly in postgraduate education in rheumatology – I led this in the West Midlands Deanery and was then co-opted as curriculum lead for the Rheumatology Specialist Advisory Committee. As part of my work within the Deanery, I was part of a group who developed a system of multi-source feedback which is now the model adopted in all UK foundation programmes. We have developed MSF within the Keele undergraduate medical curriculum.
With the help of funding from Arthritis Research UK, I have developed and evaluated (in a randomised controlled trial) education resources to support skills learning in musculoskeletal examination.
More recently I have developed an interest in the preparation of undergraduates for practice.
