Visit the 'Institute for Primary Care & Health Sciences' Website The current research programme of this newly formed Institute is focused on two main topics: chronic pain and addiction. It aims to conduct high quality research in the primary care setting or at the interface of primary and secondary care that is relevant to the NHS and its patients, and to contribute to developing a strong culture of health research. We aim to ensure that our research informs clinical decision-making and establishes more effective care management of common conditions, particularly by: • developing new models of delivering care for common problems that draw on multi-professional and inter-disciplinary approaches • expanding research capacity in health by building on the dynamic partnership we have established between the multi-disciplinary group of internationally renowned academics based at Keele and the health community in North Staffordshire and the West Midlands
Research groupings The largest research grouping is the Primary Care Sciences Research Centre. Housed adjacent to the Medical School in a new building, it represents two unique and important collaborations. Firstly, it is based on a strong partnership between different academic disciplines, eg Physiotherapy, Community Rheumatology, Primary Care and Epidemiology, in order to develop research into the causes, investigation, and effective care of common chronic musculoskeletal pain syndromes such as osteoarthritis and low back pain. Secondly, its research is underpinned by a strong partnership between NHS clinicians and the University. It has worked with local practices and healthcare professionals to create one of the largest NHS primary care research and development consortia in the country. This supports its research programme, hosting a network of practices dedicated to gathering information on common symptoms and their treatment.
The second research grouping in the Institute is the Addiction Research Group. This represents a collaboration between psychiatrists from the Academic Department of Psychiatry at Harplands Hospital and epidemiologists from the Department of Medicines Management on the campus. This group has a particular focus on the problem of co-occurrence of psychiatric illness and substance abuse, as well as policy research and clinical trials.
Research Highlights The Institute has: Secured major funding from a wide range of bodies Published on major studies that offer GPs and their patients clear and practical evidence-based choice of effective treatment for common painful conditions Collaborated with national professional, research and government bodies to develop good practice guidelines for health care in areas relating to our research (e.g. management of arthritis, back pain) Established extensive international collaborations with partner research units in Holland, Germany, Sweden and America. The Institute for Science and Technology in Medicine
Visit the Institute for Science & Technology in Medicine' Website The Institute of Science and Technology in Medicine has grown out of an internationally respected strength in biomedical engineering and expanded 6 fold between 1996 and 2001. During this time the research has been rated at the highest level of 5 and 5* by our national review body, RAE. The Institute bridges the interface between new advances in basic science and technology with medicine and clinical practice. In addition, it has increased the multidisciplinarity of the research with good integration of engineers, mathematicians, biologists, physicists and clinicians. These strong interactions under one grouping have been partially responsible for the success of the Institute alongside the strength of the individual researchers within the grouping. There are strong areas in orthopaedics, renal and respiratory medicine, cancer, pathology, neonatal medicine and obstetrics and gynaecology which span across two hospitals in North Staffordshire and Shropshire, the University Hospital of North Staffordshire and RJAH Orthopaedic Hospital, Oswestry.
The Institute is comprised of 4 major groupings : • Cell/Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine • Medical Diagnostics and Imaging • Human genomics • Clinical evaluation of new technologies and treatments
The Institute is housed on the Hartshill campus and has recently raised £3 million towards a new research facility. The aim is to provide a patient treatment facility alongside state of the art equipment for our translational research, which includes cell therapy suites, genomic facilities and advanced laser and diagnostic laboratories.
The Institute attracts major research funding from the EPSRC, BBSRC, MRC, NIH and European Union alongside major funding charities such as Wellcome Trust and Action Research. The Institute members participate in national and international forums for decision making in the clinical and scientific arena; examples include Presidency of key societies and membership of evaluation panels, review bodies and Royal Colleges. Members of the Institute lead both national and international networks in the European community and in the recent Framework VI have become part of a Network of Excellence in Tissue Engineering and Stem Cell therapies. The Institute also runs an expanding M.Sc. programme offering degrees in Biomedical Engineering and Cell and Tissue Engineering.
All of this provides for an exceptionally dynamic and stimulating environment for biomedical research. The Institute for Life Course Studies
http://www.keele.ac.uk/research/lcs/ The Institute draws together a substantial group of researchers working on a range of health and social concerns from childhood through to old age. The Institute comprises: the Institute for Ageing (including the Geriatric Medicine Group), the Psychology Research Centre, and the Centre for Childhood and Family Studies. Each group will maintain its distinctive research agenda, focused on the pursuit of research of international distinction as measured through high quality published outputs, strong relationships with user groups, and funding from research councils and comparable bodies. The Institute will have a managerial and co-ordinating role, developing a substantial infrastructure to support research, stimulating grant applications drawing upon interests across the three groups, managing research time, and providing a training environment for postgraduate research students (supported by the University Graduate School).
Professor Miriam Bernard Director Institute for Life Course Studies
The Institute aims to support and stimulate high quality research and enterprise by bringing together a multidisciplinary group of researchers working on a range of health and social concerns across the life course, from childhood through to old age. It draws on existing strengths at Keele in the fields of ageing (with one of the largest groups of researchers working in the field of gerontology in the UK), children and families, and psychology.
While existing groups have distinctive research agendas, the Institute will build and expand upon these areas, encourage inter-disciplinary work within and beyond the Institute, and foster new collaborations. Members will be supported to pursue research of international distinction, to maintain strong relationships with user groups, to seek funding from research councils and comparable bodies, and to engage in the organisation of seminars and conferences for staff and students. The Institute will have a managerial, co-ordinating and advisory role, developing an infrastructure for research, stimulating grant applications, managing research time, and providing a supportive training environment for postgraduate research students (supported by the University Graduate School).
