YEAR 1 ENTRANTS – Welcome!
As you know, medical students lead very busy lives!
We thought it would be helpful for you to know what to expect during your first week so that you can prepare yourself.
You will be busy every day but in your first year you will be free on the Sports afternoon which is on Wednesdays.
On Monday, you will do a lot of administrative stuff like registration but you will also get your white lab coats (which do make you feel like a proper medical student!). We’ll introduce you to the Medical School, the course, the first year and some of the things you’ll do as a medical student.
Tuesday is spent getting to know staff and, importantly, your group for your Problem Based Learning. There will be lectures and in the afternoon the “Great Egg Challenge” which is a light-hearted way of getting to know your new group. There is a reception with all the staff in the late afternoon where you will be able to meet other students, and your student mentors from Year 2.
On Wednesday morning you will start your first case. This is part of a clinical story you will study through the first few weeks. This session will help you work out what study you need to do before Friday. Yes, your course really has started.
Thursday is exciting as you have your first Anatomy and Histology sessions –so in labs and the Anatomy suite rather than the lecture theatre or seminar rooms. Don’t worry-we all felt a bit odd the first time!
On Friday you have your “wrap-up” for the PBL case so that you can check that you have covered what you should have for that week. You’ve survived your first week!
Remember to look out for all the social events at the University and those arranged by the Medical Students. Make the most of these but we do expect you to be on time the next day. Enjoy!
YEAR 2 DIRECT ENTRANTS – Welcome!
As you know, or will very soon learn, medical students lead very busy lives and we thought it would be helpful for you to know what to expect during your first couple of weeks so that you can prepare yourself.
On your first day, you will do some of the necessary administrative bits and pieces such as student registration but you’ll also have the chance to start to get to know each other with a fun team-building exercise!
You’ll get the chance to find your way around both the Keele University Library and the Health Library at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire, find out about the IT services we provide as well as being introduced to our anatomy dissection suite and resource area – don’t worry if you feel a bit odd, many of us did on our first visit also!
We’ll be arranging one-to-one staff/student meetings, introduce you to lots of things about the Medical School, the course, and the first year you will be spending with us as an undergraduate medical student. Although the first two weeks can be pretty chaotic, we do give you time off on the Wednesday afternoon of the first week to explore the local area, etc and, don’t forget, as a Year 2 student, you will still get Wednesday’s afternoons off for sports.
Remember to look out for all the social events at the University and those arranged by the Medical Students. Make the most of these but we do expect you to be on time the next day. Enjoy!
