This module will enable students to develop awareness of a range of health and social factors which promote or adversely affect the development of children. Students will become familiar with the resources available and required to optimise child health. This knowledge will underpin professional practice contributing to improving the health and well-being of all children.

This module is available as:

  • a compulsory core within PGDip/MSc Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (Health Visiting)
  • an optional core within PGDip/MSc Specialist Community Public Health Nursing
  • a programme/ approved elective within MSc Advancing Professional Practice
  • a free standing elective

This module aims to:
- Enable to student to develop critically in evaluating the physical, social and emotional aspects of child health and development.
- Utilise a range of evidence based sources to optimise child well being.

For those undertaking the Specialist Community Public Health Nursing Programme, specific award entry requirements apply; no other pre-requisites are required.

For those undertaking as an elective/freestanding module: healthcare practitioner with a minimum of 6 months experience and working within a relevant health care setting.

  Brief Description: A case study demonstrating evidence-based practice in assessing child health, well-being and development.

  Detailed Description of Assessment: The student will provide a critical account of normal child health and development based on a selection of cases, determining and evaluating a range of psycho-social and cultural influences which impact on a child's health, physical and emotional well-being and development (4000 words).
