This 15 credit Level 4 module critically explores the central concepts, themes and issues within contemporary end of life care. The recent End of Life Care Strategy (DH 2008) recognises the need for education to ensure that health and social care staff at all levels have the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes inherent in providing high quality and effective care for the dying, and that such education will be critical to the success of improving end of life care for all. This module will be delivered utilising a blended learning approach.

This module is available as a compulsory core within Postgraduate Certificate in End of Life Care, MSc Nursing Studies and MSc Clinical Practice.

To have a critical appreciation of the nature of palliative and end of life care.

To demonstrate a critical understanding of the current political agenda surrounding palliative and end of life care.

To recognise and critically examine the central principles of interdisciplinary palliative and end of life care

Current professional registration or equivalent
Current professional role in providing end of life care
Evidence of Level 3 academic work or equivalent

Identification and definition of end of life care principles.
Aetiology and epidemiology of life-limiting progressive diseases in adulthood: Cancer; Heart Failure; Respiratory disease; Renal disease/failure; Hepatic disease/failure; Neurological disease.
Ageing.
Levels of awareness in recognising the end of life phase.
Living with uncertainty and loss.
Models of palliative and end of life management informed by current Government policies, including the End of Life Care Strategy (DH 2008).
National Service Frameworks for identified life-limiting diseases.
The Gold Standards Framework.
Interprofessional / interdisciplinary practice and team working.

Direct teacher contact: Through a blended learning strategy which will include classroom sessions, web-based learning, telephone or face-to-face tutorial contact (50hrs)

Directed study on theoretical aspects of end of life care (50hrs)

Self-directed study and essay preparation (50hrs)
