Module Learning Outcomes/Objectives:
The student should be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of pharmacology related to joint and soft tissue injections
- Demonstrate knowledge and application of safe practice for joint and soft tissue injection
- Demonstrate an understanding of the evidence related to this mode of management
- Understand the professional issues related to the practice of injection therapy
Module Session Dates
CONFIRMED DATES 23-25 September 2013 and 18 December 2013
To develop a critical understanding of the use of injections in the management of joint and soft tissue pathology and to develop professional responsibility towards injection practice.
Applicants will need to complete and return the following
1) Managers Injection Template Letter (the template MUST be used)
2) Mentors Injection Letter Template (the template MUST be used)
(once the Mentor Pack has been read)
3) Completed application form (see above Apply button)
4) Proof of qualifications
5) One academic reference using the Reference Form (the template MUST be used)
(please note that the application form asks for two references
but only one is required)
6) Proof of up to date registration with the relevant practitioners
registration body (such as HPC, GMC, NMC)
7) Proof of up to date personal indemnity insurance
(such as CSP, RCN, GMC) For OT's written confirmation from the employing NHS Trust that they will accept vicarious liability during the applicant's training and subsequent practice is required.
Our policy is to accept students on a 'first come first served basis'. Students will only be accepted onto this module once all the relevant paperwork is complete.
This module is not normally suitable for students on a full time programme.
Principles of treatment techniques; aseptic technique, management of anaphylactic shock. Pharmacology of injection agents. Mode of action, precautions and contra-indications, interactions with other medications, possible complications. Supervised practice of techniques. Professional issues: competency to practice, professional body guidance, patient group directions, evidence base. Where applicable, additional sessions will be offered on reflective practice and portfolio building. The student will be responsible for setting the framework in which to work including identifying opportunities for supervised injections then assessed injections.
Teaching Format
Block sessions: lecturers, seminars, discussion sessions and tutorials.
Assessment
50% of mark: A portfolio containing evidence of critical thinking and appraisal related to injection therapy and practice and showing evidence formal training/education, experiential learning, critical incidents, reflection and discussion of learning experiences; and 3,000 words, plus appendices. Plus, a record sheet of a minimum of 10 assessed and successful injections signed by mentor.
50% of mark: An assignment in a negotiated topic area related to the student’s interest in the field of joint and soft tissue injection: 2,000 words.
