Module Learning Outcomes/Objectives:

  • Analyse the philosophical bases of the concept of the ‘core stability’ model
  • Display a critical understanding of the use the ‘Performance Stability’ model
  • Demonstrate assessment of the functional performance chain using the ‘Performance Stability’ model
  • Demonstrate a judicious use the above assessment to design a prescriptive exercise programme
  • Identify and, where possible, ‘predict’ an athletes/clients key injury risk, and identify key assets
  • Discuss the use movement training to optimise performance

Module session dates

Induction for new students recommended - Monday 23 Sept 2013
Session dates 15-18 October 2013

This module challenges the concepts of core muscle stability and develops low and high threshold muscle assessment and training.

Candidates should normally have a first or second class BSc honours degree in a relevant subject and/or recognised professional qualifications; with an exercise background (Professional qualifications in: medicine, physiotherapy, nursing, sport coaching, sports science, Pilate’s, personal training, occupational health etc.).

The students on the module will assess an individual's core muscle stability in terms of the site, movement direction and muscle recruitment threshold. Training is progressed towards functional tasks/activities. The module considers the process of developing a client-specific performance profile. The analysis and identification of high risk and low risk 'weak muscle links' and also the identification of a persons 'performance assets' is illustrated using case studies. The course develops and implements specific core muscle stability training programmes, aimed to integrate low and high threshold muscle retraining.

Teaching Format

Block sessions:  Lectures, seminars and workshops.

Assessment

Assignment of 3000 words - a case study with theoretical underpinning from current relevant literature.
