Much of a doctor’s professional life is concerned with facilitating the learning of junior medical staff, as well as contributing to the education of other health professionals and patients. This module blends active learning on a teaching the teachers course with a virtual learning environment on-line - to enable candidates to study at a convenient time and place.

The module aims to equip doctors with the necessary knowledge and skills to provide effective training programmes for junior doctors in training posts.

This module is open to health professionals with a relevant first degree.

Students will need to complete a Teaching the Teachers course before embarking on this module.  Choose one of the following sets of dates:

20th & 27th June 2013

Please contact Pam Stone on p.stone@keele.ac.uk for further information.

  • Needs Assessment: Translating needs into aims and objectives (goal setting strategies, resource identification and utilisation, timetabling).
  • Implementation (different teaching and assessment methods).
  • Monitoring and record keeping (use of log books and portfolios, programme management, counselling and care of students).
  • Course evaluation.  Assessment (self, peer, learner)

By the end of the module, participants will have a working knowledge of the principles of Adult Education in order to enact the following:

  • Create a training programme for their learners.  This will depend on the ability to negotiate a learning contract based on the learners' needs, and then to arrange for these to be met.
  • Be able to employ a variety of methods to teach theory and practice.  This will take cognisance of different learning styles and intended outcomes.
  • Assess learners formatively throughout the programme and be mindful of summative criteria that may influence the learner’s training.
  • Be able to evaluate their own training programme.

Students will be expected to keep a reflective learning log with a minimum of 6 entries AND design, implement and evaluate a teaching plan.
