This module will enable participants to critically consider the governance requirements and regulatory frameworks which apply to healthcare organisations and within this the role and value of clinical audit as a source of assurance. The key focus of this module will be on governance and healthcare in the UK, although the module will draw on governance developments in other sectors and countries as these have influenced the existing requirements placed on healthcare organisations in the UK.
This module will enable participants to critically consider the governance requirements and regulatory frameworks which apply to healthcare organisations and within this the role and value of clinical audit as a source of assurance.
Health or social care professional with a first degree or equivalent professional experience.
The key focus of this module will be on governance and healthcare in the UK, although the module will draw on governance developments in both the USA and Europe as these have influenced the existing requirements placed on healthcare organisations in the UK.
Core topics will include:
• Understanding the NHS: roles, responsibilities and relationships
• What is governance and why does it matter?
• Governance, risk, & assurance within the NHS
• Assuring the quality of care: the pivotal role of clinical audit
The teaching programme will include small group work, expert presentations and student led sessions/activities. The module will adopt a blended approach in terms of delivery, combining face to face sessions with group and individual activities to be undertaken through the Keele Learning Environment (KLE).
Assessment:
Group review an inquiry report and develop briefing paper
3000 word essay which requires students to demonstrate critical understanding of governance and governance systems within healthcare and the ability to apply their learning to a specific scenario/problem.
