A firm grounding in anatomy is a prerequisite for safe and effective surgical practice. This module will augment existing structured training programs for surgical trainees by offering academic support for professional training. The module will extend students beyond acquisition of essential knowledge and skills to also develop the scholarly skills of reflection and critical thinking essential for independent clinical practice.
To acquire a thorough knowledge of anatomy as applied to surgical diagnoses and procedures, as a foundation for understanding and developing the scientific and evidence base of current practice.
The module is aimed at registered healthcare professionals who are in active surgical practice or a related discipline.
This module will cover the scientific basis and scope of clinical anatomy, morphological research and imaging methods, anthropometry, study of systems-based anatomy and clinical applications of anatomical knowledge. Including:-
- Abdominal wall and abdominal contents
- Chest, cardiovascular and respiratory anatomy
- Head and neck
- CNS, cranium, spine
- Musculoskeletal system and limbs
- Pelvic and urogenital anatomy
Teaching
Activities will include: self directed learning, anatomy skills-lab and on-line activities including workshops on regional clinical anatomy, small group work and presentations, case-based discussions and critical appraisal work on the scientific literature.
