Research Groups
Split over a number of schools and departments, Keele has a number of leading groups whose research is directly relevant to research into sustainability. These range from testing of materials, to geophysical monitoring, to the understanding of technology in a societal context.
Applied and Environmental Geophysics
Part of the Research Institute for the Environment, Physical Sciences and Applied Mathematics, AEG is built around the expertise of Prof Peter Styles and Nigel Cassidy, Ian Stimpson, Jamie Pringle, Sam Toon and Rachel Westwood. The principal research theme is the application of ultra-high resolution geophysical techniques and numerical modelling in Energy, Environmental, Geodynamic, Hydrocarbon, Forensic and Archaeological areas. More here.
Basin Dynamics Research Group
Based on the study of sedimentary basins, their controls, fill, and subsequent deformation and inversion, this group’s work is applied directly to the discovery and interpretation of hydrocarbon reservoirs. Working with some of the world’s largest oil companies, the Basin Dynamics Group helps to discover and secure new sources of oil for future exploitation. More here.
Materials Research
This broad group of researchers encompasses a range of expertise relating to the study of materials, their compositions and interactions. Focused in the area of green materials, research has been conducted on solid oxide fuel cells for a number of years, leading to a greater understanding of catalytic materials and surface interactions. Of particular interest is the more recent work carried out on sustainable materials including biofuels.
Centre for Applied Entomology and Parasitology
It is an interdisciplinary research centre that offers a lively and stimulating atmosphere for advanced study and research. There are 40-50 members: professors, lecturers and their associated post-doctoral research assistants, postgraduate students and technicians. Members meet regularly for seminars, workshops, journal clubs and symposia. Research projects are supported by funding from the BBSRC, NERC, MRC, the Wellcome Trust, the Leverhulme Trust, the Royal Society, the British Council, UNESCO, WHO, the EU and industrial sources, such as Syngenta and Astra-Zeneca Pharmaceuticals. It is an internationally recognised Centre with numerous research links with other groups in the UK, North and South America, Europe and Asia. Many projects are conducted in the Tropics. More here.
Centre for Research on Environmental Action and Thought (CREATe)
CREATe brings together academics and postgraduate students at Keele who do research on environmental politics with a particular focus on action and thought. Action includes the actions of environmental activists in all parts of the world, the environmental actions of governments, business and those who may not see themselves as powerful or as activists, but who nevertheless take action on environmental issues. Thought includes work on green ideology, environmental political theories and the discourses used by policy-makers and citizens when engaging in public debate on environmental issues at all levels of global politics.
