Biodiversity - Keele University

Biodiversity

Keele University is situated in 617 acres of landscaped grounds to the west of the Potteries conurbation in North Staffordshire, UK. It has a wide variety of fauna and flora - apart from trees!

Some of this variety, e.g. the birds, has been well-studied, other aspects not so well. Much of this accumulated knowledge is available on the arboretum website.

Keele is a good site for the naturalist and the casual observer of the natural world. The many footpaths that criss-cross the University estate enable much of this natural history to be observed at relatively close quarters.

We have quite a varied flora and fauna including 134 birds, 25 butterflies, 455 moths and 220 plants. If you add to this the 150 species of tree and the 200 varities of Flowering Cherry you can see that Keele's biodiversity is very strong.

There is a guided walk leaflet and several booklets to help with your enjoyment of the campus.

There is also a sightings page and a blog that gives detail and photos of recent occurences.
