Student Action for Sustainability Conference

Student Action for Sustainability Conference

29th-30th October 2013

Keele University, UK

  • How do educators enable students to gain the skills needed to bring about transformative social change towards sustainability in their own colleges, universities and wider communities?
  • Beyond preparing  students for employment, how can colleges and universities produce graduates who are genuinely ‘change agents’ and ready to ‘be the change they want to see in the world’?
  • What challenges do students face when undertaking sustainability projects within their institutions and local communities, and how can they best overcome these challenges, and optimise the opportunities?
  • What kind of culture needs to be created in colleges and universities so that collective ‘action for sustainability’ becomes the norm rather than the exception?

Enabling students to pursue ‘activist’ projects beyond the classroom has powerful potential to generate the transformative education that is at the heart of Education for Sustainability.  Many students recognise the need for cultural change on campuses and beyond, and are motivated to adapt their own behaviour and set an example for others.  Encouraging and supporting students to channel their energies and values - in a way that is determined and driven by them - seems a vital way to support Education for Sustainability in Further and Higher Education institutions.

This two-day conference is aimed at both staff and students from Further and Higher Education Institutions who are involved in sustainability activist projects.  The conference aims to explore both the issues faced by staff who support student projects, and the experiences of students who lead sustainability projects within Further and Higher Education institutions.

This conference will be free to the first 40 people to register, including registration, refreshments, dinner and accommodation for one night.  Bursaries are available to full-time students to cover additional travel and accommodation costs.
