I was appointed as Experimental Officer at Keele University in February 1990 having previously had a variety of different support roles at Keele since 1974 – a lifetime! My first degree, BSc (Hons) Geography was obtained from the University of London (1973) and my MSc in Geographical Information Systems from Leicester University (1989). I was promoted to Senior Experimental Officer in 1997.
My main areas of research are around the general themes of:
- Geographical Information Systems (GIS)
- Medical Geography
- Social Demography
During the period 2000 – present I have been a joint holder of two major EPRC grants with colleagues in Computer Science. The first, Managing vagueness, uncertainty and granularity in spatial information systems (EPSRC GR/M56685/0), ran between 1999-2002. The second, for which I became Principal Investigator, Spatial and temporal object databases (EPSRC GR/M84473/01), ran between 2000-2003. Prior to that I have been a joint recipient of an ESRC grant - An Object-Based Paradigm for an Intelligent Geographical Information System - and have been closely involved with a number of funded research projects into the health of the population of the local region. These latter have included two separate health profiles for the North Staffordshire Health Authority and an investigation into the geographical provision of hospital trauma systems with colleagues in Geography and Postgraduate Medicine. Most recently I have been involved in studies of local dentistry provision with colleagues in Health Planning and Management. I have also jointly edited two thematic atlases - An Atlas of Fiji and A Statistical and Demographic Atlas of Malta and Gozo.
