I studied at the University of Southampton, where I gained a BA (Hons) in French and English. My undergraduate dissertation was on Marxism and feminism: I pursued these interests further in my MA (University of Southampton, 1996), which was in critial theory. My MA dissertation on mapping in novels by a number of Québécois women writers began my interest in the spatial. Entitled 'No Place Like Home', my PhD (University of Southampton, 2000) was on representations of space, place and identity in the post Quiet Revolution Québécois novel. It considered urban, rural and domestic spaces, utopian elsewheres and national, ethnic, class, gender and sexual identities.
I was a stagiaire de recherché at l'Université du Québec à Montréal during the spring and summer of 1997.
I was Visiting Eakin Fellow at McGill Institute for the Study of Canada, Montreal, in autumn 2007.
I work on literary geographies in the francophone Québécois and Canadian novel, and, more recently, in the anglophone Québécois and Canadian novel. My first monograph, Mindscapes of Montreal: Québec's Urban Novel, 1960-2005 (University of Wales Press, 2012), looks at how imaginary and material landscapes come together to produce a city of neighbourhoods. I am currently working on a project on representations of exurban spaces in francophone and anglophone Québécois fiction. Provisionally entitled Heartlands/Pays de cœur, this brings together criticism and creative writing.
I would be happy to supervise postgraduate students working in the areas of Québec Studies, Canadian fiction, literary geographies, women's writing and feminism.
