Research Clusters

The Environment, Physical Sciences and Applied Mathematics Research Institute, EPSAM, exists to provide a sustainable, multidisciplinary environment for the support, nurture and development of Research and Enterprise activity underpinning the internationally recognised pure and applied research carried out in the environmental, physical sciences and mathematics at Keele University. EPSAM is also the mechanism through which all support for research by academic staff, contract researchers and postgraduates is provided and the basis for submission to RAE 2008. We also aim to create an intellectually stimulating atmosphere and to enhance the profile of science research at Keele through a series of themed colloquia, invited lectures and outreach activity.

Seven Research Clusters have been created:

Astrophysics Prof Nye Evans Astrophysics
Computer Science Prof Pearl Brereton

Computational Intelligence and Cognitive Science
Knowledge Modelling
Software Engineering

Environment and Sustainability Dr Richard Waller Subglacial & Ice Marginal Processes, Landforms & Environments (SIMPLE)
Geosciences Prof Graham Williams

EPSAM will provide the enabling science interface to external research councils and organisations, governmental and regional development agencies and industrial collaborators in conjunction with the Research Services office.

We are keen to encourage cross-disciplinary research and work closely with other Research Institutes, especially the Research Institute for Science and Technology in Medicine and the Research Institute for Social Sciences.
