Biological silicification in plants

Lead supervisor:  Dr Chris Exley

The project aims to design a system for hydroponic culture of plants which are known both to deposit silica (biological silicification) and not to deposit silica and will use these systems to identify physiologies which discriminate between these two situations. Particular emphasis will be placed upon imaging techniques to identify silica deposits in plant tissues as well as physical and chemical techniques to characterise the silica materials which are produced.
