Environmental forensics to assist characterisation of contaminated sites

Illegal dumping of waste & subsequent environmental contamination is becoming common & proving problematic worldwide. In order to both detect & characterise dumpsites, a multi-disciplinary environmental forensic approach is appropriate, that combines remote sensing, near-surface geophysics & direct sampling methods.

This proposal will use a variety of known & suspected dumpsites in the UK as test sites to produce an optimise workflow & protocols to investigate such illegal activities, as well as numerical modelling to characterise their present & future effects.

Project outcomes will produce standard operating procedures for such investigations.
