Postgraduate Study
We offer three Masters courses, and doctoral studies in a wide range of areas.
The MA in English Literatures is aimed at anyone interested in further study in the wide traditions of literature in English. It provides an opportunity to develop your knowledge within a supportive environment, offering a wide choice of modules from Renaissance Literature, through the Romantic and Victorian periods, to the Twentieth Century, Postmodernism, American Literatures, Postcolonial Literatures and Film Studies. Students benefit from a wide choice of dissertation topics, and have the opportunity to share discussion with students taking other Masters degrees in the humanities, such as Global Media and Culture and MRes in Humanities.
M.Res Humanities (English)
The MRes in Humanities is an interdisciplinary research Masters course, in which students have the opportunity to develop an extended independent research project in an area of their own choice. The course has a strong element of research training, and can serve as a qualification in its own right or as a good preparation for a PhD. For further details about the course see the MRes page.
The MA in Creative Writing combines an opportunity for writers to develop their work while studying the critical and cultural context in which their writing is situated.
Final-year students who are considering applying for postgraduate study are encouraged to discuss it with their tutors, and with Professor David Amigoni (English Literature) or Professor Scott McCracken (Creative Writing) and to visit Careers and Employability, where information on grants is available.
PhD Supervision
We can offer research supervision for MPhil and PhDs by thesis in most areas of English literature and creative writing. For detailed information on areas of potential supervision, please see the list on our MRes page and our individual staff pages. For funding opportunities please see the Research Institute for the Humanities website.
For further information please contact Professor David Amigoni.
