I studied at the University of Southampton, where I gained a BA (Hons) in French and English (1993), an MA in critical theory (1996), and a PhD on representations of space, place, and identity in the contemporary Québécois novel (2000).
I am convenor of le Groupe de recherches et d’études sur le Canada francophone; a specialist group within the British Association of Canadian Studies.
I work on literary geographies in the francophone Québécois and Canadian novel, and, more recently, in the anglophone Québécois and Canadian novel. I am currently working on two sister research projects. The first, provisionally entitled, Mindscapes of Montreal: le roman montréalais, 1960-2005, looks at how imaginary and material landscapes come together to produce a city of neighbourhoods. The second, provisionally entitled, Heartlands/Pays de cœur, brings together criticism and creative writing whilst examining representations of Québec’s ‘regions’ and francophone Canada.
I would be happy to supervise postgraduate students working in the areas of Québec Studies, Canadian fiction, and literary geographies.
