Joe studied Politics at Manchester University, where he was subsequently a Writing Fellow. He is published by Vintage Books and Jonathan Cape.

His first novel ‘Friction’ appeared in 2007 - see a review here, and was followed by ‘Wildlife’ in 2009. His third novel - 'The Adult' won a Somerset Maugham Award in 2013 and was shortlisted for The Portico Prize. He has also published short stories.

Joe also makes films. 'Wizard's Way' won the LOCO 2013 Discovery Award and Best Comedy Feature at the 2012 London Independent Film Festival

Joe is also lyricist and lead singer of Manchester band Performance.

Joe teaches both Creative Writing and the Song Lyric at Keele.
