About the English Language Unit

The English Language Unit provides a range of facilities, services and modules to help international students succeed and get the most out their academic experience at Keele.

A range of undergraduate modules from the ELU, offered through the Electives Programme, cover such areas as:

  • academic writing and research skills
  • grammar
  • reading and vocabulary
  • seminar discussion and presentation skills
  • listening comprehension
  • pronunciation improvement
  • British cultural studies

Upon entry, all international undergraduate students take a brief English Language assessment, and any recommendations for English Language modules to be taken through the elective modules are then made.

The ELU also provides one-to-one help for any international student at Keele seeking individual, as-needed language guidance and assistance in connection with their academic work.  This includes:

  • 30-minute one-to-one booked 'English Clinics' with an ELU tutor
  • free weekly English conversation classes
  • advice and guidance on self-study for language improvement
  • a library of language and exam-preparation materials and resources for loan
  • on-line materials and links for self-study via the ELU Noticeboard through Keele’s VLE
  • advice and information on external English Language examinations and nearby testing centres

During the induction week at Keele, all international students will be given an introduction to the English Language Unit, its staff and facilities.
