Science Additional Specialism (SASP) Programme for Teachers

These are 40 day courses for teachers whose highest qualification in the subject chosen (Physics or Chemistry) does not exceed A level or who have not undertaken initial teacher training in that subject.

The TDA has funded and is supporting the development and delivery of these CPD courses. Following delivery of a successful pilot, funding for the West Midlands region has been awarded to the partnership of Keele University and the Science Learning Centre West Midlands. The provision will include the full course content and resources to teachers in schools in England . All fees and supply cover will be paid by the TDA for these courses. Successful course participants will be eligible for a £5000 payment from the DCSF.

Both courses will commence in July 2009 and run throughout the following academic year.

Outline in brief

These courses will enable participants to teach the chosen science specialism effectively with enthusiasm and confidence, to learners aged 11-19, by improving both their knowledge of, and pedagogical skills in either Physics or Chemistry.

Pre-requisites

  1. Participants will have some subject knowledge gained either through their own academic background, teaching their main subject, or from other experience.
  2. At the start of the course participants should have completed their Induction Year.
  3. Participants will have been teaching a significant amount of the relevant science, particularly within key stage 4, for at least one academic year.

Course details

  1. The courses begin on Wednesday 22 nd July 2009, with a three day induction. Thereafter course days are scheduled to be on Wednesdays during school/college terms starting on 9 th September 2009 through to August 2010.
  2. The courses are of 40 days duration, of which 30 days are spent at Keele University. The remaining 10 days will be used by the participants to complete their action research. Supply cover will be paid for all days for which the teacher is out of school/college.
  3. The course tuition fee is fully funded by the TDA.
  4. There is supply cover funding available from the TDA (40 x £150), administered by Keele.
  5. Participants will each receive resources to support the course.
  6. Participants can gain a Professional Certificate in Science (Physics or Chemistry) Education or a Postgraduate Certificate in Science (Physics or Chemistry) Education if they successfully complete 60 credits.
  7. Participants will be eligible for a financial incentive of £5,000 at the end of the course subject to achieving a minimum of 40 credits at professional level.
  8. Places are limited. Early contact is advised. Applicants will be invited for an informal interview.
  9. Only maintained schools in England are eligible for this course.
