Educational Studies - Information for New Students
Welcome to Educational Studies at Keele
If you have applied to or have been offered a place to take Educational Studies as one of your principal subjects then you will no doubt want to know what will happen after you have arrived here. This page is intended to give you this information.
In your first week you will have the opportunity to meet with Educational Studies staff. Dr. Damian Breen, the Educational Studies Programme Director, will be giving a talk to all new first years about what to expect during their first year on the programme. There will also be an informal meeting later in the week when you will have the opportunity to meet with other tutors and some current students. You will be allocated a personal tutor who will be able to offer advice and guidance should you experience any problems or worries that may impact on your studies. Tracy Roberts, the Educational Studies programme administrator, will register you and will be available to deal with any queries you may have about the programme. Tracy is based in Room CBA0.038, Ground Floor, Chancellor's Building.
In semester one, Educational Studies students take one compulsory module - Edu-10033 ‘Understanding Learning’ introduces students to theory and research about how we learn but also encourages students to apply this knowledge to their own learning as they experience their first semester in higher education. Alongside this module you will have the option of studying either Edu-10029 'Childhood, Policy and Education' and Edu-10067 ‘Back to the Future: Issues in the History of Schooling'. All modules are taught by a combination of lectures and small seminar groups in which you will have an opportunity to take part in class discussions.
If you have any problems or concerns at any time during the course of your first year, your personal tutor will be a good point of contact. You may also contact your module tutor (this is the academic who teaches you in educational studies) if you have any questions about the modules you are taking. All module tutors have office hours which they advertise on their door. At other times, you may contact them by e-mail. Tracy Roberts, the programme administrator, is also able to help with any queries regarding timetabling, module reading lists and for getting in touch with tutors.
We hope that you will find Educational Studies both challenging and stimulating and we look forward to seeing you soon.
