Educational Studies BA/BSc

Welcome to Educational Studies at Keele

Keele has pioneered the development of Educational Studies as an Honours subject in the social sciences.  The course was established here in 1994 and has since expanded – both in student numbers and in the range of modules on offer.

It continues to be one of the strongest Educational Studies programmes with students and examiners commenting positively on both the stimulating and challenging environment in which it is taught, the intellectual coherence of the programme and the diverse and lively range of modules on offer.  It came first nationally in the 2007 survey of student satisfaction and is recognised by the QAA as being of outstanding quality – receiving full marks in the last audit of teaching quality.

Educational Studies explores education from many different angles – including how education relates to the economy, how it has been shaped historically, how it affects people’s life chances, how it helps form their identities, how those who work in education are organised, and how learners learn.   It is strongly interdisciplinary drawing on philosophy, sociology, politics, psychology, history and cultural studies.  It links the study of education to other areas of life - childhood, social policy, culture, the economy, information and communication technology.

In many respects, it has a strongly contemporary focus.  It combines the academic study of education with preparation for work of a broadly educational nature, and places a strong emphasis on the development of students' skills as independent researchers and collaborative colleagues It is taught by a team with a strong research record in topics such as education policy, social exclusion, comparative education, childhood, youth, family, inclusive education, information technology, gender, ‘race’, politics and education.

We welcome onto the course students from a broad range of backgrounds, and we aim to ensure that the course is broad and flexible enough to respond to their interests and needs.
