Radiation Safety

Ionising Radiations

There are two principal Regulations dealing with ionising radiations. They are:

  • Ionising Radiation Regulations 1999 (IRR)
  • Radioactive Substances Act 1993 (RSA)

IRR are enforced by the Health and Safety Executive and the RSA by the Environmental Agency.

The requirements of these Regulations and the University's response are outlined in the Keele Ionising Radiation Regulations Sept 2012

Questions relating to ionising radiation should be referred initially within Schools and finally to the University Radiation Protection Adviser Dr. D.E. Dugdale located in the Department of Occupational Health and Safety.

Non-Ionising Radiations - Lasers

There is at this time no specific Regulation or Act dealing solely with lasers. However, existing law provides the necessary protection for workers and others involved in the use of lasers and can be robustly enforced by the Health and Safety Executive.

The Committee of Vice Chancellors and Principals (CVCP) has issued a Guidance Note for Lasers, which is available on loan from the Department of Occupational Health and Safetyt.  The University's 'Policy on the Use of Lasers' should be rigorously complied with.
