Lone Working

Contrary to popular belief, there is no legal prohibition on lone working, in fact many staff and contractors do so frequently. Establishing safe working arrangements for solitary persons, including students, is no different from organising the safety of other employees.

The purpose of this policy and guidance is to ensure that adequate provision is made to reduce the risks associated with lone working.  The policy is deliberately general in its scope and it is not intended that every eventuality is covered.  Departments and Schools should adopt this policy as a basis for their own risk assessment.

Where there is a foreseeable significant concern a suitable and sufficient risk assessment will need to be carried out by a person who is knowledgeable, trained and experienced with regards to the activity.
