Children
The University recognises that there are many children likely to be on the campus with perfectly valid reasons for being there. Whilst it is recognised that parents, care-workers or guardians of children hold the primary responsibility for their conduct and safety, it is accepted by the University that it has a legal duty, so far as is reasonably practicable, not to allow exposure of children to risks to their health and safety (Section 3, Health and Safety at Work Act 1974) as a consequence of the University's undertaking.
The main foreseeable dangers are likely to be in the more hazardous Departments where children unsupervised may well come to harm. In these cases Heads of Department should ensure they have devised local rules which have been agreed, circulated and implemented.
