Keele Concert Society -
From the Artistic Director, Alexandra Scott

Since it began, Keele Concerts Society has strived to promote a
wide variety of concerts of the highest quality, including classical
music, early music, world music and jazz. The programme for this
our 40th anniversary is testimony to the Society having achieved, and
continuing to fulfil this aim. I am therefore delighted to welcome
you to this very special season of concerts, which begins with
one of our favourite ensembles, the European Union Chamber
Orchestra. Following this we have a fantastic mixture, as always, of
both new faces and groups returning, sometimes for the 3rd time,
including the Kintamarni Saxophone Quartet, Florian Kitt and Rita
Medjimorec, VOCES8, the Elias String Quartet and the Frith Piano
Quartet. Rounding off the first half we have the inimitable Michael
Garrick Sextet.
To welcome in 2011, the Society presents members of Ensemble
360 performing at the New Vic Theatre. There are then some
real treats back at the University with Eclipse, including a flamenco
dancer, Alexandra Dariescu, O Duo and the Heath String Quartet
with a guest viola player for the Brahms String Quintet. The Chinese
New Year will be celebrated with Silk and Bamboo and the season
will come to its glorious conclusion with the Aronowitz Ensemble.
This year’s workshops in local primary and secondary schools will
be led by Owen Gunnell and Oliver Cox who make up O Duo.
We have discovered that everyone enjoys hitting a drum or other
percussion instrument whatever their age, so I’m sure both the
young people and their teachers will have a great time.
We are extremely lucky that in the days of cuts by both the Arts
Council and the Government, we have some very faithful supporters,
including Keele University which is one of the mainstays of the
Society, for which we are incredibly grateful. Our thanks to all who
continue to enable us to sustain our high quality performances.
Please tell everyone to come and join us for this anniversary season
which promises to be a true celebration of great music. I look
forward to welcoming you all in October.

Alexandra Scott
