Havergal Brian Collection
Havergal Brian was born William Brian in 1876 in Dresden, Stoke-on-Trent,
Staffordshire. He became choirboy and organist at local churches and also learned
the violin, cello and piano. Brian began composing at the age of 12 and made
his London debut in 1907. For a number of years he fell into obscurity, although
he continued to compose. After something of a musical comeback in the 1950's
and '60's, Brian died on 28th November 1972 in Shoreham-on-Sea. His musical
output includes 32 symphonies, 5 operas, 5 suites, 3 concertos and more than
100 songs.
The multi-media collection at Keele is on deposit from the Havergal Brian
Society and comprises books, photocopies, tapes, scores, theses and cuttings
encompassing the life and work of the composer.
The collection is listed, and there are no restrictions on access.
